Goals from Igor Bulatov, Oleg Zhigalov (2) and Yann Schories eased Brook Street to a comfortable 4-0 win over WingSTK at New Home Park in this morning’s international friendly match.

The match also saw recent recruits from the Academy, Kevin Jenkinson and Kenny Corney make their home debuts for the senior side, Kevin playing the full ninety minutes and Kenny coming on as a second half substitute.

“Both lads acquitted themselves well, despite being flung in at the deep end”, said Arjen afterwards. “I think the pace of the game took them a bit by surprise, even although it was only a friendly, but it’s something they’ll get used to”.

He added, “That’s Kevin’s second game for the reserves now, and although he struggled with the pace of the game late on, he’ll come good for us. Kenny’s just joined the senior side in the last day or so, so he really hasn’t had long enough to get to know everyone. That’s why I brought him on to play alongside Kevin; they know how each other play, and it showed.

On the fact that two players have come through from the Academy in quick succession, Arjen commented, “It’s good to have players coming through the ranks, and we’ve got a really good crop at the moment. Kevin and Kenny certainly won’t be the last of the current Under-19 team who will be coming up into the senior set-up”.

He added, “This season is probably the swansong for a number of senior players at the club, and three are currently transfer listed. The younger players, such as Jake MacConnechy, are now starting to come through and establish themselves in the first team, however we’ve always got to look to the future, and the lads in the Academy are our future”.

He concluded by saying, “In the past, players have been brought in from overseas as our home-grown players simply weren’t good enough. With our new scouting network in place, real quality players are being found and brought into the Academy. This is clearly now paying dividends and will also considerably reduce the wage bill in the long run. It quite simply is win-win for the club”.
