Balázs Polyák clips the ball past Söncke Vorburg in the Balvenie goal to level the scores.

After last weekend’s defeat, Joe Anderson’s Brook Street side were determined to make amends against Belvenie today. With a 3-2 win they certainly did that.

Following a long period where the match was finely balanced it was the visitors who took the lead in the twenty-fourth minute when the visitors took the lead. Unsurprisingly it was division top scorer Vittorio Tona who fired it just beyond the reach of Benito Buda.

Brook Street were quick to fire back and four minutes after going behind, only the last minute intervention by a Balvenie defender’s foot deflected Remmel Demarsin’s netbound strike away from goal.

Following this there were chances for both sides before half-time, but both keepers were on their game and allied with some wayward finishing the score remained 0-1 at the break.

Benito Buda saved Brook Street again in the fifty-eighth minute, but from then on the home side were in the ascendancy and in the space of three minutes the game was turned on its head.

With sixty-five minutes on the clock, Remmel Demarsin stormed down Brook Street’s left wing before cutting in and feeding the ball through to Balázs Polyák who clipped the ball past Söncke Vorburg in the Balvenie goal to level the scores.

Three minutes later the comeback was complete when Banin Jiménez Iniesta broke through before firing the ball just beyond the reach of the outstretched hand of the keeper.

Then with seventy-five minutes played and only ten minutes after coming on for Paul hughes, Jackie Underhill latched onto a ball through from Adam Doyle and fired it across the Balvenie keeper and into the net to make it 3-1.

Only a superb save from Balvenie keeper Vorburg kept Gillis Jacob’s thunderbolt from entering the net with eight minutes to go, and a minute later the visitors set up a grandstand finish when Frazer Millington got past the home side’s defence to finish right in the centre of the goal.

However it was not to be and Brook Street held on to record a victory that unexpectedly took them back to the top of the table.

“I got the response and more from my players following last week”, beamed Joe Anderson afterwards.

“We mixed up the midfield today and it worked a treat. I was worried when Janko [Fila] picked up the booking and I had considered taking him off. I’m glad I didn’t”.

He continued, “I couldn’t possibly have asked for more from the lads today; well, maybe not giving me palpitations for the last seven or eight minutes, but otherwise it was all good”.

He concluded by saying, “Before the game I would have torn your hand off if you’d offered me a draw today, but my lads went above and beyond and deserve all the plaudits they get”.

Elsewhere Long Shot won 2-0 at home to Desired Opponent, Wick Academy romped to a 7-0 demolition of Athletico Machrie while Falkland easily saw of Danny’s American by five goals without reply.

Aldo Pellone fires Brook Street level but unfortunately it would be the home side who would ultimately take maximum points.

Brook Street’s stuttering start to the season continued this afternoon with a 2-1 defeat at St Andrew Paisley, but it was a far from poor performance from Fermín Romero’s side.

Indeed but for an inspired goalkeeping performance but St Andrew’s Lino Amaya, the match could have been over by half-time as time and again he denied what seemed to be certain goals.

Instead the teams went in tied, but the game appeared to have turned in Brook Street’s favour when long-time nemesis Kritsada Juntip had to go off with fifteen minutes to go.

However just three minutes later it was the home side who took the lead when Aleš Kranjec finished off and attack on the left, putting the ball beyond the reach of Benito Buda

With their tails up St Andrew went all out to kill the game and went close in the eighty-first minute but Augustin Rakoto rattled the upright and the ball bounced clear.

Brook Street got back on level terms in the eighty-third minute with a routine straight off the training ground. Charlie Benham lofted a free-kick into the box which was headed back into the path of the unmarked Aldo Pellone who side-footed the ball low into the net.

With Brook Street thinking they had secured a point, disaster struck with just five minutes to go when substitute Joshua Kingston fired home to secure all the points for St Andrew.

“It was a tough game and I think we were rather unlucky”, claimed Fermín Romero afterwards.

“I honestly thought we had done enough to secure a point, but we lost that late goal and couldn’t come back from it”, he added.

“Overall I was pleased with the performance, if not the result, but we are a team in transition so we’re always going to get results like this. On another day we might have won”.

The defeat leaves Brook Street down in fifth place, six points off the pace already, but the coach doesn’t feel there is any pressure on him.

“Look, we all want Brook Street Athletic to be successful and to get out of this Division, but to do so we need to keep building the team and that will take time”.

He continued, “Of course the fans want to see the side winning, so do I, but it’s also my job to balance between winning and building a side that will get us out of this and hopefully the next tier. If I do my job right, the latter will lead to the former. That’s what I’m working towards”.

In the other matches Badger Loyal remain out in front following an 8-0 thumping of Elgin on the road, while Pirates remained the only other unbeaten side with an 8-0 humbling of Oboy shot at Pirates Arena. In the other game Winbat headed back down the A9 with all three points following a 3-0 win in Inverness.

Paul Hughes blasts Brook Street’s opening goal past Glen Cooksey in the wonderers goal.

Ten-man Brook Street held on to secure a 3-2 victory at Winbat wonderers this afternoon, a win which coach Fermín Romero described afterwards as ‘vital’.

The home side had set up with a a 4-5-1 formation with the emphasis on smothering the midfield and closing down Brook Street’s ‘engine room’ who had lined up in a 3-5-2 formation.

However initially it was hard to see how they would keep out the Division’s highest scorers until the ninth minute when they successfully swamped the box to give the Brook Street strikers no chance of getting the ball which was successfully cleared.
The home side showed in the eleventh minute that they weren’t about to sit in and watch Brook Street play pretty passes when a ball from the wonderers’ left found Festus Koech who fired it goalwards. Unfortunately for him and his side the ball rippled the outside of the net.

The home side were playing much better than they had recently and this appeared to have caught Brook Street on the hop. However following a save by Benito Buda from a wonderers attack Brook Street went ‘Route One’ as Mait Peterson launched the ball forward out of defence.

Up front Paul Hughes had anticipated the clearance and was already off and running. The ball dropped over his shoulder as he raced in on goal. One touch had the ball under control before blasting it beyond Glen Cooksey in the wonderers goal.

Five minutes later and it was Hughes again who broke down the right before cutting in and firing the ball low and hard into the net to put Brook Street 2-0 up and apparently heading for another comfortable win.

That all changed two minutes from the break when Brook Street skipper Joe Anderson picked up his second yellow card in only three minutes and with it his marching orders.

The home side immediately tried to press forward and won a highly dubious free-kick at the edge of the Brook Street box after referee Scott Kelly managed to see an infringement that no-one else either on the pitch or in the stands saw.

Within the space of three minutes Brook Street coach Fermín Romero had been irritated by Joe Anderson’s red card, furious with the referee for giving a dubious free-kick, and apoplectic when Festus Koech netted from it. Two minutes later his assistants were on hand to usher the raging coach down the tunnel and into the changing rooms before he could confront the hapless Mr Kelly.

The Peruvian had calmed down somewhat by the time the teams came back out and his mood appeared to improve when the referee had no option but to award Brook Street a penalty in the fifty-fifth minute when Adam Doyle was up-ended in the box with the defender getting no-where near the ball. The Irishman stepped up and coolly slotted the ball away to put the ten men 3-1 in front.

That mood started to deteriorate when Adam Doyle was booked for pulling his opponent’s shirt when both players were equally guilty and a ‘stern word’ would have been sufficient.

It went from bad to worse in the seventy-third minute when Winbat were awarded a penalty for what appeared to be a foul outside the penalty area. The Brook Street players protested but those were all waved away and Festus Koech fired the ball just beyond the reach of Benito Buda to reduce the lead.

This set up a frenetic last eighteen minutes but Brook Street were resolute in defence forming a blue and black wall that was going to let absolutely nothing through. Time and again they thwarted the home attacks and broke out taking the ball deep into the opposition half and running the clock down.

“Our game management at the end was exemplary and straight from the textbook”, said Fermín Romero at the post-match press conference. “We closed them down at every opportunity and were resolute in defence. The players were outstanding”.

He continued, “Going down to ten men and losing a goal so soon afterwards could have seen us put under intense pressure, but the break came just in time to break up the momentum and going 3-1 up knocked wonderers back”.

Asked about the performance of referee Fermín replied, I’ll only say that it is on the flick of a coin whether he or Koech was wonderers’ biggest influence on the match. Let’s just say he’s not on the Christmas card list and I hope we don’t encounter him again”.

“Losing Joe [Anderson] is a a blow for next weekend but I’ve just found out Adam Doyle is out now too. That certainly changes my plans and it could force us into a change of formation which is less than desirable for such an important game”.

In the other games, Bonnybrig ran out 6-0 winners at home to Livilions, Badger Loyal hit the goal trail at Eilean Donan hitting eight without reply and in the ‘Battle of the Paisley’ Pirates won 3-1 at St Andrew. So, as far as the league table is concerned, it’s very much as you were.

Janko Fila celebrates scoring his first competitive goal for the club. His second was only seventeen minutes away.

Brook Street Athletic made it two league wins from two with a comprehensive 8-1 win over Eilean Donan Devils at the LJG this afternoon, a result which took them to the top of the table.

Brook Street coach Fermín Romero took the opportunity to rotate the starting line-up and reverted to our normal 3-5-2. As expected Jeremías Marchena came in for Benito Buda, with Nat Wallace coming into centre defence and Callum Ironmonger in for Raúl Colen while Aldo Pellone held onto right-wingback spot. Janko Fila replaced Kalle Konkka and teamed up with Diego Misuraca and Kari Kienberger in the middle with Adam Doyle on the right and Charlie Benham making a rare start on the left.

Up front Connor Hutton took the armband and was partnered by Paul Hughes whose recent performances merited the overdue starting place.

Brook Street were quickly into their stride and went 1-0 up after only three minutes. Surprisingly though the scorer was Janko Fila netting his first competitive goal for Brook Street.

Paul Hughes weighed in with his first goal of the season after only twelve minutes however just to emphasise that Brook Street weren’t going to have things all their own way, the Highlanders pulled a surprise goal back in the nineteenth minute through Angus Redcliff, his second of the season.

This served as a reminder that Devils are not to be treated lightly but within two minutes Janko Fila had recorded his second competitive goal to restore the two-goal advantage. Five minutes later it was 4-1 as skipper Connor Hutton got on the mark.

Brook Street were operating like a well-oiled machine and it was one-way traffic after the break.

Adam Doyle found the net six minutes into the second half and nine minutes later Paul Hughes netted his second goal of the game to make it 6-1.

The roof was caving-in on the visitors when Connor Hutton fired home from an acute angle to record Brook Street’s seventh goal with sixty-three minutes played, and Nat Wallace completed the misery eleven minutes later with his first goal of the season.

Afterwards Fermín Romero said, “I think we were worthy of the big win although I’m disappointed that we conceded a sloppy goal”.

He continued, “That however spurred us on and we hit back straight away before running away with the game”.

“We had a number of very good performances and Janko Fila was a relevation in the centre of midfield. It looks like we’ve focussed on playing him out wide when attacking midfielder might suit him better. We tried him there in training and he did ok, and today’s game gave us the opportunity to put it into practice in a competitive game. He rose to the occasion and it’s now for him to push on”.

“Our front two got four goals between them but goals came from all areas of the pitch and that is a huge bonus for us”.

He concluded by saying “We’re building a solid foundation on which to build a serious championship challenge”.

Elsewhere St Andrew Paisley went two games unbeaten with a 6-1 win at Livilions, a result that anchored the West Lothian side at the foot of the table; Bonnybrig Eagles are on maximum points following a 4-0 home win against Winbat while Paisley Pirates demolished Badger Loyal at Smith Stadium to pick up their first three points of the season; Gers on the other hand remain pointless.

Jeremías Marchena will be between the sticks tomorrow when Brook Street take on Eilean Donan Devils at the LJG.

Eilean Donan Devils visit the LJG for Brook Street’s first home game this season tomorrow, and Fermín Romero is looking for his side to build on last weekend’s excellent start to the season in Paisley.

“We have an easier game tomorrow an it’s a chance for us to get goals on the board while rotating the squad”, he said this afternoon.

“No disrespect to Devils, but having just come up from Division V everyone will be seeing them at the whipping boys”, he said. “However Bonnybrig might have underestimated them last weekend and got a fright, so we certainly won’t be treating them lightly”.

He continued, “We’ll go about our business professionally and by sticking to our game plan we’ll get the all important three points.

Fermín confirmed that Benito Buda will be on the bench tomorrow with Jeremías Marchena getting the starting place. “Benito picking up the injury on Wednesday made the decision for me”, the coach said.

He will however make the final decisions on the other positions tomorrow prior to kick-off.

Kick-off is at 16:30.

Diego Misuraca fires home his second goal to put Athletic 3-0 up with less than half an hour played.

Brook Street Athletic stormed into the Third Round of the Scottish Cup with a thumping 5-1 win against Stucastle United at Buckie Lane today and were rewarded with a home glamour tie against second tier Caerlaverock Knights.

A devastating display in the first half saw Brook Street race to a 4-0 lead at the interval which killed off any challenge from the home side.

Mait Peterson finished from close range after only fourteen minutes before a brace from Diego Misuraca in twenty-three and twenty-nine minutes had Brook Street well in control.

Kalle Konkka struck in thirty-seven minutes to put Brook Street four-up eight minutes before the break and Adam Doyle fired Brook Street’s fifth goal with sixty-six minutes on the clock.

Benito Buda was forced out of the game with just six minutes to go and was replaced by Jeremías Marchena, making him a doubt for Saturday.

The outcome of the game was already decided but as it entered stoppage time United got a consolation goal through Jorge Tarín although were it not for some outstanding saves by United keeper Pedro Ulises Jiménez Brook Street could have added two goals in stoppage time.

“We put the game to bed early so we could ease off which was always the game plan”, said Fermín Romero afterwards. “It was disappointing to lose Benito Buda, but he will be ok for the weekend”.

When asked if Benito would play at the weekend he replied, “No, I was planning on giving Jeremías Marchena some game time anyway on Saturday so it wouldn’t have been an issue anyway. It’s only a minor knock but we don’t want him aggravating it to make it a problem”.

Asked about the draw for the Third Round he replied, “I would have preferred to get an easier tie, but we have a chance to go toe to toe with a top side”.

“It’s a massive step up in class for us, but we won’t let ourselves down. We’ll go into the hame hoping to cause an upset, and it certainly would be quite an upset, but it’s the romance of the Cup and we’re up for the challenge”.

Connor Hutton runs to celebrate in front of the Brook Street fans having put his side 2-1 up.

Fermín Romero’s Brook Street side may have kept their title challenge alive with another invaluable three points heading back to Monifieth this evening, but the way in which they let Gers back into the game left him none-too-pleased.

“At 4-1 we should be looking to shut the game down and protect our advantage, especially at a difficult ground like Smith Stadium. Instead we switched off and let them right back into the game. Had we not scored immediately after they pulled it back to 4-3 I think we may have struggled to get over the line. That’s simply not good enough if we are serious about challenging to win the league”.

“We cannot afford to be so defensively poor”, he concluded.

Brook Street were quick out of the traps and Bogusz Cacek went close twice in the first tewnty minutes, however it was the Division’s top scorer Joe Anderson who fired Brook Street into the lead in the twenty-second minute when he clipped the ball home after storming through the centre of the home defence.

The home side quickly fired back and after only three minutes they were level when Raul Miguel Coelho finished off a move that embarrassed the Brook Street rearguard and raised Fermín Romero’s hackles for the first time in the game.

Fortunately for the Brook Street players, their coach’s wrath was diluted in the thirty-fourth minute when the scored a goal of real beauty.

A fantastic ball down the line by Craig Smart released Connor Hutton on the left and he cut in towards the home team’s goal. He fired a low cross-pass out of reach of the defenders which reached strike partner Joe Anderson who shaped up to fire on goal. As the home defenders raced to close him down he played the ball across the box to the now unmarked Connor Hutton who rolled the ball into the empty net. This was a classic Brook Street attack and re-established their lead going into the break.

Brook Street solidified their grip on the game at the start of the second half and a defensive slip up saw Bogusz Cacek spring the Gers offside trap and power the ball into the net to put the visitors 3-1 up just before the hour.

Worse was to follow for the home side three minutes later when Aldo Pellone stormed through the Gers central defence and chipped the ball past Vicente Olivos to make the score 4-1.

While a 4-1 scoreline would usually be enough to see off most sides, no-one told Gers or their fans who got right behind their side to spur them on.

That backing bore fruit just two minutes after going 4-1 down when Qadan Dochin raced through and lobbed the advancing Benito Buda to pull a goal back.

Brook Street seemed to have contained the Gers fightback and that was perhaps what almost lead to their undoing as there was a clear dropping-off in the intensity of Brook Street’s play.

With seventy-three minutes on the clock Gers were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position just outside the box which Qadan Dochin duly dispatched into Benito Buda’s net to pull the score back to 4-3 and the Brook Street players were visibly shocked.

Such situations call for cool heads and few are cooler under pressure than Kari Kienberger, so fortunately it was he who ran on to Kalle Konkka’s through ball and drove the ball low into the net.

Brook Street’s lead was restored to two goals only a minute after it had been reduced to one, and so it was to remain as Fermín Romero’s side upped their workrate again to close out the game.

They made things harder for themselves than they should have been, but this was without doubt a crucial three points for Brook Street Athletic.

Aldo Pellone opens the scoring in only the third minute to send Brook Street on their way to victory.

Brook Street stormed to another impressive win this afternoon when Fermín Romero’s side won 4-2 away tho St Andrew Paisley to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Brook Street started well and were 1-0 up after only three minutes when Aldo Pellone slammed the ball into the net after a move in the centre of the park sliced open the home defence.

The home side were not bowed by this setback, and levelled in the tenth minute when Enrico Bani chipped the ball past Benito Buda following a break from the right.

However, two quick goals by the visitors put the home side firmly on the back foot.

With tewnty-six minutes showing on the clock, some slick passing in midfield sent Aldo Pellone through and with the composure of a veteran striker, the full-back fired home.

The Brook Street fans had barely taken their seats again when they were on their feet again as Bogusz Cacek dispossessed Helmer Dalsgård and raced goalward before firing low into the net.

Brook Street had their tails up and could have been 4-1 up a minute later when Connor Hutton volleyed a cross goalward, however a phenomenal save from Lino Amaya tipped the ball away to safety.

That fourth goal would come after a number of near-misses, but it would take until the eightieth minute before a through ball from Bogusz Cacek to Kari Kienberger saw the latter score from close range.

Much to the disgust of Benito Buda, Augustin Rakoto ran onto a ball that sliced through the Brook Street defence and slotted it past him to reduce the deficit.

The win keeps Brook Street in pole position, although Stirling’s 3-2 win at Badger Loyal maintains their 100% record. These two however are now a huge five points clear of the chasing pack.

“We faced the first of our real league rivals today and the players rose to the challenge”, stated Fermín Romero afterwards. “We got a good solid win although the players are angry about conceding late on. The fact they are is a good thing”.

The coach is also happy that the goals are being shared out between the players.

“It is good that we are not relying on one or two players for our goals”, he said. “The fact we can score from any position gives us an edge in games, and when you are playing against good sides, that edge can be crucial”.

He continued, “Next weekend we face another rival in Badger Loyal Rangers. I see they lost today which makes next Saturday’s game huge for both clubs, although we have home advantage”.

Bogusz Cacek wheels away after scoring what proved to be the decisive goal from the spot.

Bogusz Cacek’s twentieth minute penalty strike proved enough to secure all three points at New Annfield this afternoon. As the home side looked to halt their three-game losing streak even ‘parking the bus’ with a 5-5-0 formation was not enough to keep Brook Street out.

Brook Street burst out of the traps and quickly gained the upper hand with Kari Kienberger stinging Stirling keeper Garth MacGirr’s fingertips with two goal attempts in quick succession.

Benito Buda was called into action just before the quarter-hour mark when he blocked a half-chance, but that was merely a minor break in almost one-way traffic.

When Conor Meldrum swung in a cross in the nineteenth minute the referee spotted a high boot in the box and pointed straight to the spot. Given the lack of protests from the home players it would appear that the officials got the decision right.

With the ball on the spot Bogusz Cacek stepped up and went for power against Garth MacGirr who was having a good game. The Stirling keeper got his fingers to it, but Bogusz’s decision to put his laces through the ball proved correct and it had too much behind it for MacGirr to keep it out, much to the keeper’s disgust.

With Stirling sticking resolutely to their ultra-defensive formation there were few opportunities for Brook Street although five minutes before the break, Raúl Colen managed to burst down the left before firing a low drive goalwards that rattled Garth MacGirr’s right-hand post before being cleared.

If real goalmouth chances were few and far between in the first half, they were even more scarce in the second and only Kari Kienberger’s rushed and poor attempt with eleven minutes to go was the only effort on goal.

With that, Brook Street secured the points to keep the pressure on Red Star who only got the upper hand in Paisley with three minutes to go.

“We stuck to our gameplan and didn’t lose sight of our objective”, said Balz Deitz after the match. “We had to be patient, but we got the break when it mattered most. We’d squandered a few chances and their keeper was having a good game, but Bogusz stepped up to the mark”.

On Stirling playing 5-5-0 he said, “I can see why they did it as their confidence is bound to be low following three defeats on the bounce, but in the end it has failed and they threw away a chance to attack us and now they’ve lost four in a row”.

He finished by saying, “More importantly however we are now seven league games unbeaten and still breathing down the necks of Red Star”.

Adam Doyle drives the ball into the net to complete his first senior hattrick the last time the sides met at love street.

Brook Street face saints are coming at love street tomorrow and will be looking to pile the pressure on the leakiest defence in the league whose confidence is bound to be low following two successive 8-0 league defeats.

Tomorrow, Balz Deitz will be without Kalle Konkka who is suspended while Mait Peterson is out injured. Indeed following our friendly match with SS Sodium on Wednesday, in addition to Mait and Aldo Pellone, Benito Buda looked like he would also be missing tomorrow.

“The defence was looking particularly threadbare at that point”, admitted Balz when he spoke to This is Brook Street this afternoon, “but fortunately Benito and Aldo have both recovered from their respective knocks and will both be available”.

Also available will be Tibor Koteczky as he continues his return from injury.

With the prospect of his side hitting the goal trail he continued, “This kind of game is great for morale amongst the team, especially if we score a lot of goals. They’ve conceded a total of sixteen in their last two league games so this is a terrific opportunity for us to improve our goal difference”.
