For Brook Street, probably the only highlight of today’s cup tie was the debut of 18 year-old Academy graduate Ryan Caldor.

Joe Anderson’s Brook Street Athletic side were given some harsh lessons at the LJG this morning as BSC Asgard hit them for six to dump them out of the Scottish Cup.

“We were taken apart by a very strong side”, admitted the Brook Street coach afterwards. “They basically swapped out their front three from the weekend and replaced them with a trio of players that could walk straight into the starting line-up at any club”.

“I could have fielded our first team and lost; they were that good; some of their stats are just off the scale”, he added. It never looks good losing six goals, but it was really a masterclass out there”.

“Losing four goals in the first half did for us”, he said. “If we could have got to half time only three down we might have been able to steady the ship, but with the four goal you could see the heads going down”.

“The lads rallied a bit in the second half, but by then the damage was done”.

“It was harsh learning experience for both the players and me; the players have come up against a top side and now know the standard of player they are going to come up against more and more, and I have learned that we have a hell of a long way to go to compete against teams like BSC, albeit we had a weakened side out”.

He continued, “Perhaps being stuck in tier four for so long has set us back more than I had thought, but it also makes the challenge of getting to that standard all the more appealing”.

“I’ve seen a couple of things today that think we could use, so we’ll be trying them out in training this week. I was also pleased that young Ryan Caldor got some gametime and make is debut for the senior side. He’s a good kid with bags of potential. He did well in the Academy and I’m sure he’ll become a top defender in the years to come”.

Asked if he regretted putting out a weakend side today, Joe replied, “Not at all. We learnt a lot from the game, the entire squad got gametime this week and at the end of the day the Cups are not our priority”.

Brook Street now drop down into the Tartan Cup next week and travel up the coast to face old adversaries nineteen eighty-four next Wednesday.

On hearing the draw Joe said, “Yeah, another tough one and against a team we’ve enver beaten. A few of the squad, myself included, have faced them before and never won. There might be some first team players wanting another crack at them…”

Before that though is an important league fixture on Saturday when Brook Street head west to face Danny’s American Bhoy’s.

It will be the first meeting between the sides, but it is a fixture that Joe Anderson is not concerned about, especially given Brook Street’s poor record in the competition.

“This may surprise some folk, but it’s all about keeping things real”, the coach said this evening. “I know we’ve got a rotten record in this competition, but I’m not putting out a side to win at all costs, especially when we have no chance of lifting the trophy”.

He continued, “I don’t want to run the risk of key players picking up injuries needlessly, so sure I can afford to, and will, mix up the line-up but winning the tie isn’t everything to me”.

“Don’t get me wrong, if we win it will be brilliant, but I’m not going to lose any sleep if we get knocked out”.

Kick-off tomorrow is at 10:30.

Jackie Underhill vaults over Pirnmill keeper Bertie Northby as his goal puts Brook Street one-up.

Joe Anderson’s Brook Street Athletic eased themselves into the Scottish Cup Second Round and a home tie against BSC Asgard next Wednesday, with a comfortable 5-0 against Pirnmill Punks today.

The new Brook Street coach surprised many by fielding a predominantly second string side, but his decision was vindicated in the thirteenth minute when smart through ball from Remmel Demarsin left Jackie Underhill free to round the keeper and score the opening goal of the game.

Garth Wallace doubled Brook Street’s lead ten minutes before the break when he stormed through before rolling the ball under the advancing Bertie Northby and into the net.

Midway through the second half a mix up between the Pirnmill keeper and his defence allowed Garth Wallace to nip in and fire the ball home to make the game safe.

Brook Street were far from finished though and with seventy-two minutes on the clock Adam Doyle broke through and was up-ended in the box. It was a stonewall pen and after picking himself up he took the penalty himself and smashed it high into the net.

Three minutes later and Brook Street’s victory was complete when Jackie Underhill broke through before driving the ball across the keeper and into the net.

“We put in a solid performance and got our reward”, was Joe Anderson’s innitial comment on how his first competitive game as coach had gone.

He continued, “We got the ball down and played on the ground which is how I want to us to play, and we scored good goals as a result. The lads put in a shift and we’re through to the next round. Their hard work deserved that”.

Asked why he had brought the entire squad to Arran he replied, “We wanted to do some routines with the whole squad so we needed them here. I also wanted training with eleven versus eleven as we’ve got an important game at the weekend”.

He continued, “I probably wouldn’t do that normally, but I wanted to find my best line-up and formation, or at least my preferred line-up; I think I got that one right”.

Joe Anderson and his Brook Street side will now focus on Saturday’s league opener at the LJG when Long Shot F.C. visit.
