Despite failing to score against Uli Town, Tom Sandman and Jānis Graubiņš are forming a strong partnership up front.
“We might be out of the Cup, but we put up a decent show”. said Joe afterwards. “Let’s not forget this is a young side and we had four teenagers in the starting lineup; the combined age of the front two was only thirty-seven after all”.
Brook Street were 2-0 down after half an hour but it wasn’t until five minutes from time when the visitors made the game safe.
“We closed them down better after the break but were still making chances ourselves which was really encouraging”, the coach added. “Ok, we didn’t finish any of them off, but that will come. Tom [Sandman] and Jānis [Graubiņš] are forming a really good partnership and from it the goals will come”.
“You can see the younger players improving with every game”, he added.
“Sure they’ll have off days but you’ve got to expect that form them from time to time. Overall though progress is definitely being made there and with the rest of the squad too”.
“That for me is more important that playing in cups you have absolutely no chance of winning or where you have an increased risk of players picking up injuries or cards that could impact on the side later in the season”.
“It also means I will not be playing 4-4-2 for the friendlies”, he laughed.

Callum Ironmonger slams home the opening goal and his first of the game. He would score a second later in the match.
Brook Street were quick into their stride and took the lead in the sixth minute when a cut back from Charlie Benham reached Callum Ironmonger who had stayed up following a corner, and the big defender slammed the ball into the net.
Play raged from end to end with no side taking advantage until a quarter of an hour in when Gaspar Mouta got his head to a well placed ball from the left and powered it home to tie the game.
The game continued to be finely balanced until the thirty-fifth minute when Brook Street re-took the lead when Remmel Demarsin sent Jackie Underhill through and the striker wasted no time and blasted the ball home.
Borderers were still a threat though and went close just after the restart but the shot was too high, but this miss came back to haunt them just after the hour when Janko Fila was played in and fired home.
Callum Ironmonger had looked to have wrapped things up when he volleyed home with four minutes to go, but back again came Borderers and Mark MacLeary set up a grandstand finish when he fired home with two minutes of regular time remaining.
However any hope of a late comeback were killed off right as the game entered stoppage time Jānis Graubiņš fired home to make the final score 5-2 and take Brook Street through to the Second Round.
“Despite it being an unfamiliar formation and a largely inexperienced line-up, the lads performed exceptionally well and they thoroughly deserved to progress to the Second Round”, said Fermín Romero afterwards.
“Although there probably wasn’t much between the sides I’m naturally glad that we are in the second round and I think we did enough to just about warrant the win”.
In the Second Round, Brook Street will make the short trip over the Tay to face old rivals Much Rucking in the Marsh next Wednesday with the kick-off being 11:00 at Mile Deep Stadium.

New teenage signing Janis Graubins was introduced to the press when he arrived from Latvia last night.
Commenting on the signing when introducing the player to the press last night, Brook Street Coach Fermín Romero said, “Janis can play up front or attacking midfielder with significant development potential. He’s definitely one for the future and should do well if he continues to develop”.
Looking to the future he said, “We’ll be seeing more signings like this going forward as we look to provide a more functional ‘conveyor-belt’ of talent ready to step into the first team when the time comes”.
“Ideally, these players would be coming from the Academy, but there is not a steady enough stream of players making the grade, so we have to sometimes look further afield”.
He continued, “We must also be conscious that these kind of moves don’t always work out, but at least if they don’t players will have been developed and have a significant sell-on value. This can be a significant revenue earner for the club.
Janis will wear the number 25 shirt and may get the opportunity to make his debut in this morning’s friendly.
