Following a long period where the match was finely balanced it was the visitors who took the lead in the twenty-fourth minute when the visitors took the lead. Unsurprisingly it was division top scorer Vittorio Tona who fired it just beyond the reach of Benito Buda.
Brook Street were quick to fire back and four minutes after going behind, only the last minute intervention by a Balvenie defender’s foot deflected Remmel Demarsin’s netbound strike away from goal.
Following this there were chances for both sides before half-time, but both keepers were on their game and allied with some wayward finishing the score remained 0-1 at the break.
Benito Buda saved Brook Street again in the fifty-eighth minute, but from then on the home side were in the ascendancy and in the space of three minutes the game was turned on its head.
With sixty-five minutes on the clock, Remmel Demarsin stormed down Brook Street’s left wing before cutting in and feeding the ball through to Balázs Polyák who clipped the ball past Söncke Vorburg in the Balvenie goal to level the scores.
Three minutes later the comeback was complete when Banin Jiménez Iniesta broke through before firing the ball just beyond the reach of the outstretched hand of the keeper.
Then with seventy-five minutes played and only ten minutes after coming on for Paul hughes, Jackie Underhill latched onto a ball through from Adam Doyle and fired it across the Balvenie keeper and into the net to make it 3-1.
Only a superb save from Balvenie keeper Vorburg kept Gillis Jacob’s thunderbolt from entering the net with eight minutes to go, and a minute later the visitors set up a grandstand finish when Frazer Millington got past the home side’s defence to finish right in the centre of the goal.
However it was not to be and Brook Street held on to record a victory that unexpectedly took them back to the top of the table.
“I got the response and more from my players following last week”, beamed Joe Anderson afterwards.
“We mixed up the midfield today and it worked a treat. I was worried when Janko [Fila] picked up the booking and I had considered taking him off. I’m glad I didn’t”.
He continued, “I couldn’t possibly have asked for more from the lads today; well, maybe not giving me palpitations for the last seven or eight minutes, but otherwise it was all good”.
He concluded by saying, “Before the game I would have torn your hand off if you’d offered me a draw today, but my lads went above and beyond and deserve all the plaudits they get”.
Elsewhere Long Shot won 2-0 at home to Desired Opponent, Wick Academy romped to a 7-0 demolition of Athletico Machrie while Falkland easily saw of Danny’s American by five goals without reply.
The new Brook Street coach surprised many by fielding a predominantly second string side, but his decision was vindicated in the thirteenth minute when smart through ball from Remmel Demarsin left Jackie Underhill free to round the keeper and score the opening goal of the game.
Garth Wallace doubled Brook Street’s lead ten minutes before the break when he stormed through before rolling the ball under the advancing Bertie Northby and into the net.
Midway through the second half a mix up between the Pirnmill keeper and his defence allowed Garth Wallace to nip in and fire the ball home to make the game safe.
Brook Street were far from finished though and with seventy-two minutes on the clock Adam Doyle broke through and was up-ended in the box. It was a stonewall pen and after picking himself up he took the penalty himself and smashed it high into the net.
Three minutes later and Brook Street’s victory was complete when Jackie Underhill broke through before driving the ball across the keeper and into the net.
“We put in a solid performance and got our reward”, was Joe Anderson’s innitial comment on how his first competitive game as coach had gone.
He continued, “We got the ball down and played on the ground which is how I want to us to play, and we scored good goals as a result. The lads put in a shift and we’re through to the next round. Their hard work deserved that”.
Asked why he had brought the entire squad to Arran he replied, “We wanted to do some routines with the whole squad so we needed them here. I also wanted training with eleven versus eleven as we’ve got an important game at the weekend”.
He continued, “I probably wouldn’t do that normally, but I wanted to find my best line-up and formation, or at least my preferred line-up; I think I got that one right”.
Joe Anderson and his Brook Street side will now focus on Saturday’s league opener at the LJG when Long Shot F.C. visit.

Callum Ironmonger slams home the opening goal and his first of the game. He would score a second later in the match.
Brook Street were quick into their stride and took the lead in the sixth minute when a cut back from Charlie Benham reached Callum Ironmonger who had stayed up following a corner, and the big defender slammed the ball into the net.
Play raged from end to end with no side taking advantage until a quarter of an hour in when Gaspar Mouta got his head to a well placed ball from the left and powered it home to tie the game.
The game continued to be finely balanced until the thirty-fifth minute when Brook Street re-took the lead when Remmel Demarsin sent Jackie Underhill through and the striker wasted no time and blasted the ball home.
Borderers were still a threat though and went close just after the restart but the shot was too high, but this miss came back to haunt them just after the hour when Janko Fila was played in and fired home.
Callum Ironmonger had looked to have wrapped things up when he volleyed home with four minutes to go, but back again came Borderers and Mark MacLeary set up a grandstand finish when he fired home with two minutes of regular time remaining.
However any hope of a late comeback were killed off right as the game entered stoppage time Jānis Graubiņš fired home to make the final score 5-2 and take Brook Street through to the Second Round.
“Despite it being an unfamiliar formation and a largely inexperienced line-up, the lads performed exceptionally well and they thoroughly deserved to progress to the Second Round”, said Fermín Romero afterwards.
“Although there probably wasn’t much between the sides I’m naturally glad that we are in the second round and I think we did enough to just about warrant the win”.
In the Second Round, Brook Street will make the short trip over the Tay to face old rivals Much Rucking in the Marsh next Wednesday with the kick-off being 11:00 at Mile Deep Stadium.
The home side brought in Connor Hutton and new signing Remmel Demarsin for the suspended duo and it was Connor who opened the scoring in the eighth minute to a roar of deafening proportions from the Brook Street fans. This was clearly a release of tension after the visitors had made a bright start.
Twenty-four minutes in and debutante Remmel Demarsin found himself unexpectedly through one on onw with the keeper and that probably contributed to him snatching the shot which the Eagles’ keeper saved well.
It was a game of few chances so Connor Hutton must have rued firing straight at Gianluca Spada just after the half-hour mark and with it the last clear-cut opportunity of the half.
While happy to surrender possession to the visitors in their own half, Brook Street were asserting their dominance as the game entered the second half, and this bore fruit in the fifty-seventh minute when Raúl Colen broke through on the right, leaving the entire defence trailing in his wake before slamming the ball into the net.
Brook Street were going all out to finish the game there and then and two minutes later Gianluca Spada kept his side in the game unbelievably tipping Paul Hughes’s swerving shot round the post.
However with just less than half an hour remaining Raúl Colen dodged numerous challenges before thundering the ball into the net to secure the points and kill off any possible come-back from the visitors.
The points were in the bag and with it Brook Street were in a commanding position six points ahead with five games remaining.
Afterwards Brook Street coach Fermín Romero while delighted with the win was playing down its importance.
“There are fifteen points to play for and we only have a six point lead. All that is certain at this time is that we can’t get relegated. While very unlikely we could still end up in a relegation play-off”.
He continued, “All that said, this was a superb performance by the players and they got the win their hard work deserved. There were many excellent preformances but for me those of Connor [Hutton], Raúl [Colen] and Remmel [Demarsin] need further mention. Connor leads the line extremely well and does so much work off the ball that sometimes goes un-noticed; Raúl is growing into a tremendous player and is a great finisher as he showed again today; and Remmel did remarkably well for someone who had only met his colleagues fir the first time two days ago. That said, the whole team should be proud of their efforts”.
Elsewhere, Eagles’ defeat was capitalised upon by Paisley Pirates whose 4-0 home win over Winbat saw them move into second place on goal difference; St Andrew Paisley kept themselves clear of the relegation play-offs with a 9-1 humiliation of Eilean Donan and Badger Loyal eased themselves further towards safety with a 6-1 defeat of Livilions at Smith Stadium.
A home win would see Brook Street open up an almost unassailable six point gap over their nearest rivals, and while a draw wouldn’t be a bad result, it could have repercussions on a potential automatic promotion. A defeat however would see the title race thrown back into the melting pot with Paisley Pirates also coming back into contention.
Fermín Romero has not had the best of preparations for today’s fixture after losing both Joe Anderson and Adam Doyle through suspension, however the acquisition of Belgian winger Remmel Demarsin on Wednesday and Paul Hughes’s good form has offset this somewhat.
“It’s not the best way to prepare for an important match but it is what it is and we have to just get on with it”, he admitted.
“Having a new player coming straight into the squad is not something I would have planned as he’s only had a couple of days training with us, but he’s good enough to step in if I need him”.
Kick-off this evening is at 16:30.
Introducing the winger to the assembled press this morning Brook Street coach Fermín Romero said, “We’ve been short of cover in the winger positions since Bogusz Cacek and Róbert Ungvári moved on and Adam Doyle’s suspension emphasised how short we were further”.
“We had been searching the transfer market for suitable players and saw that Remmel was available. We did our research and concluded he would fit in well. The rest as they say is history”.
Remmel himself said, “I’d only made two Cup and one league appearences in my time at Vasco which was disappointing, so when I heard of Brook Street’s interest I leapt at the chance”.
He continued, “I’m looking to play first team football and I believe I will be given a better chance of that here. This is a fresh start for me with the opportunity to improve and hopefully play first team football. From what I’ve seen this is a terrific club who shouldn’t be playing as low as the fourth tier. I’m delighted to be here and hope I can do well”.
As Adam Doyle is suspended for Saturday’s showdown with Bonnybrig, the young Belgian may be given an early opportunity to impress.
