“It’s more than I anticipated”, he said, “but it’s welcome nonetheless. Remko’s almost thirty and his form over the past couple of seasons has been disappointing. It was inevitable that he would be dropped sooner or later, it just happened to be sooner and he didn’t take it well. He or his agent decided it was time to move on and that was that”.
“However, we only look forward and to that end we’ve brought Davie McKallon in from the Academy. He’s a player that I know Andrew Cleary has high hopes for and if Andrew rates him very highly, that’s good enough for me”.
He continued, “He’s very raw, but he knows the way to goal. This is a huge step up for the lad and as such we’ll maybe give him a half or an hour tomorrow depending on how he’s doing.
Tomorrow’s Tartan Cup tie with saints are coming in Paisley will be the second time the sides have met, the last resulting in a 6-2 win for Brook Street in the Thistle Cup twenty-two seasons ago. In that game Leoš Loos and Krsto Grubić both struck twice with Brook Street’s other goals coming from Andy Harte and Zsolt Baboss.
Kick- off at Love Street tomorrow is at 11:00.
Zsolt Baboss today completed his move away from New Home Park in a deal with Swedish Division V side Saltsjöbadens AIK worth a reported £490,000.
In his ten seasons at the club, Zsolt played in one hundred and thirty-four competitive matches, netting on seventeen occasions.
While the working relationship between coach and player had clearly broken down, Zsolt remained popular with the fans, and they along with his former colleagues will without doubt wish him well with his new club.
It was probably the briefest press conference in the history of Brook Street Athletic Football Club, but no-one could be in any doubt as to the fury of coach Leoš Loos following his side’s 6-1 drubbing by Printers Juniors this afternoon.
“We’re never going to get out of the mire if players push the self-destruct button and leave us short-handed when we’ve just gone a goal down”, he raged.
Speaking of Zsolt Baboss, he said, “That player will not be playing for this club again. I need all hands to the pump, and if he’s more interested in a personal vendetta, then he’s absolutely no use to me, or this club, and having spoken to them, the board of directors are fully behind me on this”.
“I’ve told him in no uncertain terms that his conduct was totally unacceptable. I’ve told him to clear his locker and stay away from the training ground. As soon as his red card is spent, he will be transfer-listed. He has no future at our club”.
And with that, he was gone. We asked Zsolt Baboss for his opinion, but this was met with a terse “No comment”.
So, it would appear that the Hungarian full-back will be leaving after one hundred and thirty-four competitive mtches and seventeen goals.
“Yes, his finishing was clinical, but our build-up play was also worthy of note”, said the coach. “He’s fast and is good with both feet so he’s definitely an asset to have in our arsenal”.
He continued, “Performing like that in friendlies is one thing, but if Elisio plays like that in the league, we might have to look at making the move more long-term”.
“However”, he said, “it’s early days, so we’ll just have to see how it goes”.
Sam Ferretto opened the scoring with a diving header with only three minutes played before Eliseo doubled the lead on the half hour mark. Over the following eleven minutes, he completed his hat-trick before Zsolt Baboss, making his comeback from injury, made it 5-0 a minute before the break.
Muhammad Noorani made it six in the sixty-sixth minute and Alex Clapperton wrapped up the scoring nine minutes from time.
Fortunately the squad suffered no further injuries and with Zsolt Baboss returning from injury, the side is starting to get back to full strength as the coach noted.
“Zsolt came through unscathed and Garabed is progressing well, so we’re hopeful of being at full-strength for the potential title-decider against The Tiny Spacemen a week on Saturday”.
While the player/coach’s suspension is easily covered, having Garabed and Abel missing, Alex Clapperton is left as the only winger on the club’s books which poses a considerable problem for the coaching staff, as Leoš pointed out in the post-match press conference.
“With only one recognised winger available for next weekend’s vital match at Crass we face the choice of altering our formation or entering the transfer market to see if we can pick up someone on a short-term deal as cover”.
“I’ve not yet decided on which course of action to take, but time is not on our side”.
Of Garabed’s injury along with his own and Abel’s suspensions he said, “Garabed took some tought treatment from their full-backs and it’s looking doubtful for him making next weekend’s fixture. As for our suspensions, mine was just stupid on my part, and Abel’s was down to a mistimed tackle”.
He continued, “We’ve both been walking the tightrope for a few weeks so if there is anything positive to take from them it that, at least, it’s not the final game of the season we’ll miss”.
“We’re down to the bare bones now. Hopefully Zsolt will come through Wednesday’s friendly ok and we will at least have options in defence. It’s the wings that are troubling me though”.
On the win itself he said, “It could have had the potential for us to slip up, but fortunately scoring so early, along with hitting four goals before half-time killed off any chance of an upset. In fact, they never had a single strike on goal which probably indicates just how much on top we were”.
“If we continue that form into next week’s match, we have the chance to set up a title-decider at New Home Park on the final day of the season. The stakes couldn’t be higher”.
The game also marked the debut for Paco Palleras who put in a solid if unspectacular performance at right-back.
“Unspectacular is fine by me”, said Leoš Loos when asked to comment afterwards. He continued, “Paco was asked to do a specific job, he did exactly that and I’m very happy with his performance. He’s a totally different kind of player to Zsolt, so anyone who was expecting more of the same will be disappointed. I knew exactly what I was getting, and that’s why I signed him”.
Turning his attention back to the result, he said, “I think we totally dominated the game, but we really only played for about an hour”. He continued, “It’s hard to keep going when you’re so far in front, and so it proved today. This is in stark contrast to last week’s friendly, and to be perfectly honest, I would prefer matches like last week’s to today’s”.
Leoš said, “We don’t have a lot of defenders at the club, and with Zsolt looking as if he’ll miss a number of games in the run-in, we felt that it was important to bring someone in who was a recognised defender, and who would provide not just cover, but contribute to the team”.
He continued, “Paco has lots of experience and will not only steady the ship, but also be able to guide players through matches. He can play in either wide positions or in the middle, so provides us with versatility that we maybe haven’t had so far”.
Speaking of his move, Paco said, “I’m delighted to be here. Brook Street are a club going places, and I want to be part of that”.
He continued, “I’m not here to simply make up the numbers, but I’m also not naïve enough to think I can walk straight into the first team. I will have to be at my best to stay in the first team, should I be fortunate enough to get there in the first place. I’ve got to prove I am worthy of the place by performing well in the reserves, and that’s exactly what I intend to do”.
Paco will meet up with his new team-mates in the morning and will go straight into the squad to face Chilean side, Wanderers club in a friendly at New Home Park on Wednesday.
The home side’s cause was not helped by the dismissal of full-back Daniel Mallock in the sixty-third minute for an off the ball incident, but with the game already won, Brook Street chose to keep things tight and not take any undue risks.
In fact, with Brook Street increasing their goals advantage over The Tiny Spacemen by another two, it could have been the perfect afternoon had Zsolt Baboss not picked up an injury that may well have ended his season.
“It was a truly shocking challenge”, fumed Leoš Loos afterwards, “and it only received a yellow card as punishment. How it wasn’t a red I’ll never know”.
On the result he said, “We showed real desire and energy and had the game wrapped up by half-time. We passed the ball really well and controlled large spells of the game, all of which is very pleasing. Above all however is the fact we’ve won another three points and that’s another game gone”.
Brook Street comfortably saw off Brentanella in this morning’s friendly match at New Home Park. Two goals each from Fraser Carragher and Phil Mullally along with a Muhammad Noorani strike eased Athletic to a 5-0 win over their Italian visitors.
“We played some super football this morning”, claimed Brook Street coach Leoš Loos, and there wee few in the ground who would disagree. We created a lot of chances and were fortunate enough to finish off a number of them”.
He added, “A repeat of that on Saturday, and I’ll be happy”.
The coach was also pleased that his charges came through the match unscathed.
“Zsolt made his comeback and I’m pleased to say that he has suffered no adverse reaction. He’ll come back into the squad for Saturday’s match, along with Abel Soffia who, while he did not play today, will be available for the match against Maxum”.
“It’s just one of those things”, admitted Leoš Loos when he met the press afterwards. “He twisted the knee and we’ll just have to hope there’s no lasting damage”. He continued, “It’s safe to say however that he’ll be sitting out Saturday’s match against Highlands and Islands United”.
On the plus side, the New Home Park side bossed the midfield and that proved to be the crucial factor. Not only that, but the midfield were responsible for scoring six of the goals.
“We got the break with a very soft penalty that Manny buried, but from then on we were in complete control”, said the coach. “Lope fired in another hat-trick and goals from Abel and Eike had us cruising before Andrew saved the front line’s blushes by netting late on”.
He continued, “It was important to get a confidence boosting win ahead of Saturday, but I’ll have to mix things up a little bit for that as Sam Ferretto is suspended and we’re now going to be without Zsolt. We’ll take that in our stride though”.
